GENERAL UROLOGY

KIDNEY STONES

Kidney stones are solid mineral deposits that form inside the kidney. They may stay silent or cause severe pain when they move. Symptoms include sudden sharp pain in the back, vomiting, burning urination, or blood in the urine. Stones can form due to dehydration, diet, genetics, recurrent infections, or metabolic disorders.

Treatment Options:

  • Medical Expulsion Therapy Medicines that help small stones pass naturally.
  • URS Laser Stone Removal – Using a small telescope to break stones with laser.
  • RIRS (Flexible Endoscopic Removal) — For stones inside the kidney without any cuts.
  • Supine PCNL / Mini-PCNL — Minimally invasive keyhole surgery for large stones.
  • ESWL Shockwave Therapy — External waves to break smaller stones.
  • Prevention Plan — Diet modification and metabolic evaluation.

URETERIC STONES

These are stones stuck in the ureter, causing blockage of urine flow. They cause intense colicky pain, nausea, and sometimes infection. Prompt treatment prevents kidney damage

Treatment Options:

  • Medicines to help stone passage.
  • URS (Ureteroscopy) with Laser — Gold standard treatment.
  • Stenting — Temporary relief if there is infection or significant blockage.
  • RIRS for stones that migrate back into the kidney.

PROSTATE ENLARGEMENT (BPH)

As men age, the prostate naturally grows larger. This can press on the urinary passage and cause frequent urination, night time urination, weak flow, or incomplete emptying.

Treatment Options:

  • Lifestyle changes — Reduce caffeine, avoid late-night fluids.
  • Medications — Alpha blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.
  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • HoLEP/ThuFLEP Laser Prostate Surgery
  • TURP
  • Advanced Options — UroLift, REZUM

STRICTURE URETHRA

A urethral stricture is a narrowing of the urine pipe due to scar formation. It may be caused by infections, trauma, or previous procedures. Symptoms include slow stream, straining, or recurrent infections.

Treatment Options:

  • Urethral Dilatation / Optical Urethrotomy
  • BMG Urethroplasty — Gold standard for long or recurrent strictures.
  • Substitution & Augmentation Urethroplasty
  • Follow-up flow tests to prevent recurrence
